Printable Program Summary The Masters of Science in Technology Systems, Information Security concentration prepares graduates for employment in the Data Integrity/Information Assurance field. The program provides hands-on experiences in network security, intrusion detection, incident response and network security system design and management. The 18-hour concentration builds upon the 12-hour core to provide knowledge to build career opportunities in occupations such as: Network Architect, Information Security Officer, Network Administrator, Corporate Technology Trainer, Computer Analyst, Information Systems consultant, and Technology Integration Specialist.
Admission Standards An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional association and have an overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale on all undergraduate work. Each applicant must take a standardized graduate test such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) and achieve a satisfactory score. Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic computer network and computer operation as evidenced by any of the following: COMPTIA Network+ certification, or Microsoft Network Essential certification, or Cisco CCNA certification or equivalent course work, or completion of ECU graduate courses 6810 and 6820 prior to taking any courses in the specialization. The Department of Technology Systems is a national leader in offering graduate, technology related degrees online. The program is Internet- based and students are advised, complete courses, collaborate on projects, perform research, and complete the degree via the Internet. Each student should have a state-of-the-art computer and reliable Internet access. Students will spend 10-15 hours per week in preparing for and participating in each course. Most of the students in the program are working professionals who are pursuing the degree for career advancement. Average completion time is 24 months if six credits per semester are taken. Courses are scheduled in a sequence over the fall, spring, and summer semesters and this allows program entry in any semester. Formats for the courses vary but all include frequent interaction with the instructor and other students. Courses are offered using a variety of Internet-based tools including streaming video, email, chat, threaded discussion, web, file transfer, and collaboration tools.
