MSOS Admission

The MSOS degree is best suited to students with solid backgrounds in natural science, health, business, engineering, and technology who are interested in further specialization in occupational safety and health.

Applicants applying for admission to the MSOS program must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with majors in engineering, technology, science, or any fields having a strong science component which would enable an individual to relate to the bio-science aspect of occupational health assessments. However, students with non-technical majors such as business, management, health, and other related majors are considered if they have work related experience in the area of occupational safety and health or industrial operations. If academic deficiencies exist (chemistry, statistics, etc.), candidates may be accepted into the program contingent upon the successful completion of certain courses designed to fulfill the identified deficiencies by the MSOS Admission Committee.

Applicants will be evaluated through an extensive process using an Admission Matrix that employs high quality standards. The applicant’s academic as well as practical experience in occupational safety and health will be also reviewed. Applicants who meet the qualifications will be personally interviewed by an Admission Committee to verify their qualifications and evaluate their level of enthusiasm and commitment for the field.

The Admission Matrix comprised of grids relevant to competencies congruent with the occupational safety and health practitioners’ competencies that are normally defined by the profession. The admission matrix includes the following element with weighting factors:
  • Undergraduate degree GPA
  • GRE results or equivalent graduate examinations scores
  • Undergraduate major
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Sample of writing skills
  • Related work experience
  • Personal interview with the Admission Committee
Financial aid and scholarships may be available to qualified applicants to support their expenses. Also, funding support might be available to qualified students for traveling to attend local and national conferences.
