On-Line Master of Construction Management (MCM) Degree

East Carolina University is proud to announce an On-Line Master of Construction Management (MCM) degree program.  The department is a proponent of collaborative network-based learning and offers its graduate program completely online.  Graduates from this program are prepared to manage rapidly changing technologies and technical systems.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the ECU Graduate School. Applicants may use either GRE or GMAT test scores for the MCM program.   Applications are available on-line.  Since the MCM program is an on-line program, information on anticipated tuition and fees costs can be found at the ECU Division of Continuing Studies.

In addition, for acceptance to the Master of Science degree in Construction Management an applicant must have completed an undergraduate degree in either construction management or a industry related discipline such as engineering, architecture, facilities management, architecture technology, and engineering technology and have completed a minimum of three years of construction experience after degree completion. Students from other disciplines may also be accepted, but must typically have a minimum of ten years of construction experience.

• Portfolio – All applicants must submit a portfolio (see below) to demonstrate type and extent of construction experience. 
  • The portfolio will be the primary evaluation tool for final admission of all applicants.
  • A faculty committee to assure applicants have attained the base level program entry requirements will evaluate each portfolio.
  • If undergraduate deficiencies are present, the committee will prescribe a method for their removal.
• Experience - Applicants must show strength in experience at the management level.
• Computer Knowledge - Students accepted into the program shall meet the proscribed computer system, software, and Internet connectivity to verify their compliance with Construction Management on-line requirements.

1. CMGT 6600 - Critical Analysis and Evaluation of Construction Documentation (3)
   • Prerequisite: Acceptance into CMGT Masters Program. 
   • Methods of critically analyzing project data associated with construction design, process application, and project control problems and formulating logical solutions through a variety of documentation sources.
2. CMGT 6610 - Advanced Computer Applications in Construction (3)
   • Prerequisite/Corequisite:  CMGT 6600
   • Understanding of emerging computing and information technologies in construction management and engineering.
3. CMGT 6620 - Human Resources and Training (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600 
   • The study of Human Resources in construction business environments; the theories of human behavior and how it is influenced by leadership, organization, environment, motivation, and culture.
4. CMGT 6630 - Advanced Applications in Construction Scheduling (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • Managing construction scheduling, project control, and strategic planning and analysis of single and multiple projects.
5. CMGT 6640 - Land Use Management and Development (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • The course investigates the principles and practice of site planning and infrastructure design for large urban developments, with relevant aspects of land use theory and implications for site planning.
6. CMGT 6650 - Global Management of Construction (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • Special problems and procedures related to international construction projects; impact of social, cultural, legal, and financial aspects of international contracting; logistics of labor, materials, and equipment in a foreign environment.
7. CMGT 6660 - Quality Control Systems (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • Developing and implementing methods of controlling and evaluating quality control in all processes of construction.
8. CMGT 6662 - Legal Implications of Design & Construction (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • Risk liability in the construction industry, contract case law, tort law, negligence, products liability, and the role of liability insurance and the professional liability of designers and building contractors.
9. CMGT 6664 - Advanced Cost Estimating/Cost Analysis (3)
   • Prerequisite: CMGT 6600
   • Incorporation of emerging estimating and cost control measures in construction industry. Conceptual and definitive estimating, cost developing, cost analysis methods, project delivery implications, international work implications, international work implications, and computer applications and modeling.
10. CMGT 6670 - Special Topics in Construction (3)
    • Prerequisite: Consent of Department Chair.
    • Special Topics in selected areas of construction including but limited to exploration and research in personal areas of interest.
11. CMGT 6700 - Research Capstone Seminar (3)
    • Capstone Project development.
    • Provides graduate students in Construction Management an opportunity to conduct independent study and research for the Master’s degree program.

In addition to all Entrance Requirements established by the East Carolina University Graduate School, the following items are required for review prior to the determination of acceptance into the MCM degree:

2. Work History with responsibilities
   • Documentation of 3 to 5 years of construction management since completing a BS degree
   • Documentation of 10 or more years of construction management experience if BS is in unrelated field

4. Documentation of construction software abilities
5. PowerPoint presentation
   • Graphic / Text description of Construction projects you have been involved, explaining your responsibility and duties on the project.

   • Must address your management skills and performance in management
